C-section Recovery

Physiotherapy support for C-section recovery, scar comfort, core strength, abdominal confidence and return to movement after birth.

A C-section is major abdominal surgery, and recovery can feel different for every woman. Physiotherapy can help you understand your scar, rebuild strength, manage tightness or sensitivity, and feel more confident with lifting, movement and exercise.

What this is

What is C-section recovery physiotherapy?

C-section recovery physiotherapy supports your body after abdominal surgery and birth. It can help with scar tightness, sensitivity, numbness, pulling, abdominal weakness, core confidence and getting back to daily movement or exercise.

The aim is not to rush your recovery. It is to help you understand what your body is ready for, what may need support, and how to rebuild gradually with scar care, movement, strength work and practical guidance.

FAQs

C-section recovery FAQs

When can I start physiotherapy after a C-section?

You can ask for advice early, especially around comfort, movement, breathing, lifting and knowing what is safe to start with. Hands-on scar work usually waits until the wound is fully closed and healing well, but there is still plenty we can support before that stage.

Can I bring my baby to the appointment?

Pre-crawling babies are welcome at the home clinic. The appointment can be flexible around feeding, changing or settling, so you do not need to worry about your baby needing you.

Can physiotherapy help with a C-section shelf or overhang?

Physiotherapy cannot promise to change appearance, but it can help with how the area feels and moves. Scar mobility, swelling, tissue tension, posture, abdominal strength and core function can all be looked at, especially if the area feels tight, stuck, sensitive or difficult to reconnect with.

Will I need an internal assessment?

Not usually for C-section recovery alone. The focus is often on your scar, abdominal wall, movement, strength, posture, lifting and day-to-day comfort. If pelvic health symptoms are also part of your recovery, Garance will talk through your options clearly and you stay in control of what you are comfortable with.

How many appointments will I need?

Some women only need one appointment for reassurance, scar advice and a clear plan. Others choose follow-ups to keep progressing scar work, core strength, lifting confidence and return to exercise. It depends on your recovery and what you want help with.
